Here lies the largest icon of Christ's face in the entire North American continent.
It was founded as Assumption Orthodox Church in 1921 in downtown Oakland, as the first Greek Orthodox chruch in the East Bay.
It moved to it's present location, and name, in 1960. It was elevated to status of Cathedral in 1992, and is used as a nexus for all Greek culture in the East Bay, with many festivals and cultural events.
They are now constructing a large chapel dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary that will be used for midweek liturgies, youth liturgies, and other special occasions.
It is currently headed by Fr. Tom Zaferes and Fr. Michael Tervo
