The church is located at Caminate , a hamlet in the municipality of Fano (PU) .
Near the castle-like mansion built in 1365 at the behest of Caminate Jailbird Malatesta, and of which now remain modest ruins, was built by Jailbird also the church dedicated to St. James.
After the end of Malatesta rule took place in 1463 , the castle was confiscated by Pius II together with the assets of Sigismondo Malatesta and demolished. The rubble was used to rebuild the walls of the city to the sea ruined by the action of the waves. The Church of St. James escaped demolition and its bell tower was turned into soldiers for the custody of the Vicariate of Mondavio . Later, the church came under the title of SS. Philip and James , became a parish .
In 1757 it was rebuilt by Archbishop Luigi Bellini on the same design of the Malatesta . The present building dates back to 1890 , as reported by the plaque on the wall to the right of the church.
