The groove or step Furlo is a gorge located along the original route of the Via Flaminia, the stretch where the river runs along this tributary of Candigliano Metaurus in the province of Pesaro-Urbino in the municipality of Fermignanoo.
The gorge was formed between the upstream Pietralatra (889 m) and Mount Paganuccio (976 m), due to the erosive force of the river Candigliano; over thousands of years has reached a considerable depth, but this is now no longer visible because of the dam, built in 1922, which reduced the rushing stream to a placid lake.
By Decree of the Ministry of Environment of 6 February 2001 published in the Official Gazette of 12 June 2001, General Series 134, was established Furlo Gorge State Nature Reserve.
