The church is located in the historic center of Fano (PU).
The Church was built by the Friars Minor Observant, who came into Fano since 1455 and chose as their first home the Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Ponte Metaurus. The new and final home was acquired in 1519 and named Santa Maria Nuova in San Salvatore, in memory of the previous building dedicated to the Savior; the rededication took place in 1557. Externally the church, a single chamber, is presented with a gabled roof with facing brick, the facade is articulated by a portico with three arches supported by slender columns with Corinthian Sailing roofing, built around 1543 probably by the stonemason John Bosso.
