archaeological site, ancient civilization, tell (mound)
The ancient habitation mound was the center of a minor Bronze-Age kingdom, and was known to the Assyrians in the Iron Age as Zamaha. The Bronze-Age name of the city, however, is disputed, some scholars favoring Karana, others Qattara; both cities formed part of the same kingdom, and both are amply attested in the surviving cuneiform texts from the area.
