The Humphrey Building is one of four contenders for the title of oldest building in downtown Colorado Springs still standing in its original location. (The others are the Root Building at 24 South Tejon Street, the original Grace Episcopal Church at 217 East Pikes Peak Avenue, and the McAllister House at 423 North Cascade Avenue.) All four were under construction simultaneously.

Construction of the Humphrey Building began in August of 1873 and was completed in December.

The current facade is not the original one, but rather is the result of a remodel in the 1910s.
