This 1,177 ft. long, 8 ft. high fence was installed in 2010 in an effort to prevent Asian carp from traveling from the Mississippi River basin into the Great Lakes basin.

Eagle Marsh was identified as a potential pathway for Asian carp to move from the Wabash River system into the Maumee River which drains into Lake Erie. Although the Wabash and Maumee basins drain in opposite directions and have no direct connection under normal conditions, their waters mix under annual periods of flooding in the marsh (via Junk Ditch and Graham McCulloch Ditch). Asian carp are already well-established in the Wabash and Mississippi Rivers.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service headed the federally-funded project. A large earthen berm will replace the fence in 2014.
