Waynedale was founded in 1921 by Methodist preacher and funeral director Abner Elzey. In 1957, the community successfully petitioned to be annexed into the City of Fort Wayne.

Present-day Waynedale is home to 10,225 Fort Wayne residents, retaining much of its pre-annexation identity and character. The community is home to a bi-weekly newspaper, The Waynedale News, and holds an annual Memorial Day Parade.

Waynedale consists of a collection of smaller neighborhoods, mostly within Fort Wayne city limits, including Avalon Place, Belle Vista, Elmhurst, Ferndale, Indian Village, Lake Shores, Lakewood Park, Old Trail, Sand Point, and Winterset. The boundaries of Waynedale are according to Waynedale.com.
