20-34 Bank Street (New York City, New York)

USA / New Jersey / Hoboken / New York City, New York / Bank Street, 20-34
townhouses, Greek Revival (architecture), 1840s construction

A row of ten 3-story Greek-revival residential buildings (Nos. 16-18 were originally built as part of the row) completed together in 1845 as rowhouses. A continuous cornice line caps the whole row. They are clad in brick above ashlar basements. Out of this entire row, only three of the houses (Nos. 18, 24 and 28) have had their stoops replaced by ground floor entrances.

These Bank Street row houses have high stoops leading, in some cases, to the original, handsome late Greek Revival doors, flanked by pilasters with Corinthian capitals and narrow sidelights, the whole surmounted by a transom bar and rectangular transom. An unusual canopy, supported on vertically placed console brackets, shields the entrances. In the case of Nos. 18 and 24, a window at first floor level has replaced the former doorway, but the original door lintel has been retained.
