This Roundhouse and turntable represented the end of the line for the Illinois Central's Chicago to Omaha/Council Bluffs rail line. The facility is located inside a wye, the western leg of which continues west for about a mile and a half, where it reaches the east bank of the Missouri River, which it traverses via a massive double track swing bridge. On the other side of the river, the track enters Nebraska and the city of Omaha, where it connects with the Union Pacific and BNSF railroads. The roundhouse was used to repair steam locomotives and the turntable was used to flip the engines around, so they would be pointing the proper direction for their trip back to Chicago.
