C.O. Bigelow Building (New York City, New York)

7-story Romanesque-revival office building completed in 1902. Designed by John E. Nitchie for Clarence Bigelow's chemist business, it has two main bays. The stone trim of the twin Romanesque arches, which take in five stories, and the large, classical sheet metal cornice with swags, are the outstanding features of this striking pharmacy. The first two floors are framed by large, rusticated stone piers with ornately carved capitals and a cornice with "BIGELOW BUILDING" carved into it. The 2nd floor has a wide, cast-iron framed bay window, and wrought-iron railings in front of the lower portion. A neon sign projects out from the facade here. The upper floors are clad in red brick, with the two large arches framed in stone, with black cast-iron infill. The top floor has six round-arches with keystones, and horizontal stone banding. The facade is crowned by a black iron roof cornice with dentils, modillions, and swag in the fascia board. The Bigelow pharmacy still occupies the lower levels with remarkable historic integrity of original interior fixtures from bronze display cases to lighting fixtures.
