Tell Hajib or Tell Hajeb, which has given its name to the surrounding settlement, has been tentatively identified as the site of the important ancient Mesopotamian city of Irrite or Irridu. In the 14th and 13th centuries BC, this town assumed a strategic importance in the rivalry between the Hittites and Assyrians for control over the Upper Mesopotamian kingdom of Mittani (Hanigalbat). Although the site is of impressive size, the identification remains tentative, and other localizations have been proposed, including at Tall Bandar Khan or at Ayn al-Arous farther to the southeast. If the identification of Irrite/Irridu with Tell Hajib is correct, in the Iron Age the site was eclipsed by neighboring Hadatu (Arslan Tash/Şêran).
