Historic Catholic Church. Church dedicated in 1809; expanded in 1853-1855. St. Rose Priory was first foundation of the Order of Preachers in the United States, established in 1806, by Fr. Edward Dominic Fenwick, OP, of Maryland, and three English Dominicans. Named after St. Rose of Lima, the Dominican lay tertiary and first canonized saint of the New World. Also located here, St. Thomas Aquinas College (1806 - 1828) was the first institution of Catholic higher education west of the Alleghenies. Its most well known student was Jefferson Davis, who studied here for two years. St. Rose Cemetery established in the 1820s, although there are many earlier burials adjacent to the church.
