Rundegg Castle in Merano's Obermais neighbourhood, was erected in 1600 upon a square-shaped medieval tower house dating from the 12th or 14th century. In the 17th century Rundegg was reconstrocted from a simply styled country house into a mansion. The estate was ennobled an "Ansitz" in 1625 an thus exempted from tax-levies. In 1976 Castel Rundegg was renovated and turned into a hotel. Until present days the sturdy castle houses a luxurious 4-star superior hotel with beauty and spa facilities.
