Legnano is a city in the northwest part of Lombardy, 20 km far from the main town, Milan,
with a population of 58.363 inhabitants.
Legnano is well known to be together with Rome the only city quote in the Italian national anthem, where is reminded the battle of Legnano, fought on may 29, 1176 by the northern Italy united boroughs, against the holy roman empire. The emperor Frederick Barbarossa
intended to establish the empire power, but was beated. In this battle,
"Alberto da Giussano" distinguish himself as a legend.
To commemorate the victorious battle every year the "Palio di Legnano" take place the last sunday of may. The "palio" culminates with the horse race, where the 8 "contrade"
(districts)that symbolize the city territory, challenge one another. The 8 contrade are:
San Bernardino, Flora, S. Martino, S.Domenico, S. Magno, S. Ambrogio, Legnarello,
S. Erasmo.
