Constructed in 1925, the 600 seat theater was designed by C Howard Crane and modified in the Streamline Moderne style in 1936 by Charles Agree. The theater continued to show films into the 1970s when it became a concert venue hosting acts like Bob Seger and the MC5. By the 1980s it became an adult bookstore and aroused much controversy.

In 2008 the property was given to Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency who initially wished to demolish the building to build housing. Plans were revised after several protests and the theater is being preserved as part of the Lincoln Park Lofts project.

The exterior of the theater is to be preserved and the interior converted into 12 loft apartments and two 1,200 sq. ft. commercial units. A 24 unit, three story building is to be constructed behind the AutoZone property.
