Metro International Trade Services was acquired by Goldman Sachs in 2010 which uses a number of Detroit area warehouses to store aluminum. Goldman reportedly has control of about a quarter of the world's aluminum inventory and takes more into storage that it releases resulting in a price spike in the cost of aluminum.

The building was at one time the home of aluminum manufacturer Wolverine Aluminum.
