Sri Andal Temple

India / Tamil Nadu / Srivilliputtur /
 temple, hinduism

Sri Andal, one of the 12 Alwars of the Vishnavism, was born here. She is belived to be an incarnation of Padmavathi Thayar (wife of Lord Vishnu). She was born in the Thulasi Garden in Srivilliputhur. One of the Alwars used to make garland for Lord Vishnu, adopted her and brought her up.

One day when her father made a new garland for Lord Vishnu. Andal wanted to try out the garland on herself, when her father caught her red handed. He could not digest the fact that her daughter had used the garland meant for his Lord. He scolded her for doing so and made a new garland for his Lord. But when he offered the garland to Lord Vishnu, he refused to take it. He then appeared in person and told him that Andal was incarnation of Padmavathi and hence he wanted the same garland worn by her. He also said that he will announce a date when he will marry Andal and complete her stay in the world.

The birth place, the cradle-like structure in the Thulasi garden. The temple is dedicated to her and Lord Varadaraja Perumal.

The temple has another significance. The temple's tower (gopuram) is the the emblem of the Tamilnadu government. Srivilliputhur is also famous for its 'pal khoa' sweet. Make sure you try it when visit the place.
