Elmwood Cemetery is one of five cemeteries operated by the City of Lancaster. The cemetery was established in 1838 and is one of the oldest, most historic cemeteries in the city.

Several famous people are buried at the cemetery, including:
- Civil War General Henry Giesy
- Charles Sherman; father of Civil War General William T. Sherman
- Lancaster's first white settlers, Joseph and Dorothy Hunter
- "Stagecoach King" Darius Tallmadge
- Scott James, Lancaster's first black police officer, also a veteran of the Civil War
