Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle (Washington, D.C.)

USA / District of Columbia / Washington / Washington, D.C.
cathedral, christianity, Romanesque (architecture), NRHP - National Register of Historic Places, 1840s construction, Roman Catholic church, nonresidential building, Renaissance Revival (architecture)

Cathedral church of the Catholic Archdiocese of Washington, though most official functions are held at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception a few miles to the northeast. President Kennedy's funeral Mass was offered here, an event which is commemorated by a floor mosaic in the main aisle just outside the sanctuary.

In 2005, this was the site of the funeral for United States Chief Justice William Rehnquist, even though he was Lutheran. Past Bishops of Washington, including Bishop James Hickey, are buried in the St. Francis Chapel located to the right of the main entrance.

The church was built in 1840 to a design by C. Grant LaFarge with a mosaic by Edwin H. Blashfield and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Parking is very limited; churchgoers are advised to take the Red Line metro to either Farragut North or Dupont Circle stations and walk.

  • A beautiful cathedral with great music adorning its services. Unfortunately, visiting the cathedral is an experience besmirched by the panhandlers who are perennially stationed outside.
