Roncalli Square (Roncalliplatz)
Domplatte was called the newly created (1968) pedestrian area around the cathedral. The southern part of the Domplatte is called Roncalliplatz, and connects the Domkloster with the road Am Hof (Old North). It was named for Pope John XXIII (1881 - 1963), whose real name was Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli. He was beatified on 03/09/2000 by Pope John Paul II..
The main attraction at the location are the Cologne Cathedral and the Roman-Germanic Museum . The south portal of the cathedral opens to the Roncalli-Platz. The traditional Dom Hotel is located on the west side of the square.
