The hotel is named after Cologne Cathedral (the Dom), located directly opposite the cathedral. It is a historic hotel opened in the mid 1800s and completely destroyed in WWII bombings, except for part of the facade, which was integrated into the current modern hotel. In 2011 the historic Blau-Gold-Haus, built in 1952 to the rear of the hotel as an office building, was restored and rebuilt as a new wing with 42 new guest rooms.

The hotel closed in 2013 for renovations, originally scheduled for completion in 2014. As of 2025, it has not yet reopened.
