Muvattupuzha

India / Kerala / Muvattupula /

Muvattupuzha is the eastern gateway to Kochi City.

Three Rivers THODUPUZHA, KOTHAMANGALAM & KALIYAR joins here in this Thriveni Sangamam, and flows as a single river and joins at Vettikattu Mukku near Vaikom to Lake Vembanad.
This river is also known as "GANGES OF THE WEST"
A bath in this river is considered as Sacred as the river flowing through forests and not polluted by extensive Urbanisation still the river water can give medicinal touch
Once an important trading centre dealing in all kinds of hill produce, the place has been rendered inconspicuos due to development of towns like thodupuzha, perumbavoor ,Kothamangalam, and due to lack of political leadership and inefficent planning.

Also has rich cultural heritage - the native of a musical legend Shatkalagovinda Marar - who was a great saint who could sing in 6 scales.
Muvattupuhza Enlightened Lovers of Arts-(www.melafinearts.org) established 1969 holds the top order in Kerala's Fine Arts Societies and dominant in the socio-cultural movement.

  • My dear readers, Muvattupuzha is to be known for entient saint visitings to the muvattupuzha rever. Budhists and Jainans were mainly among them. They irrected temple in several places. But due to the comming of Hinduism, the temples were either distroyed or converted to Hindu temple. Some reminants were still seen in remote aria. For example" KALLIL TEMPLE AT mETHALA"

  • Muvattupuzha is located in Ernakulam District of Kerala and is 59 km east of Ernakulam on the National Highway 49. The place gets its name from the Muvattupuzha River and is the meeting point of the Thodupuzha, Kothamangalam and Kaaliyar rivers. The strategic location of Muvattupuzha between the high ranges and the ports of Kochi and Alappuzha made it an important commercial center till the dawn of 19th century. With the arrival of modern means of transport, Muvattupuzha lost its prominence. Vazhakkulam village near Muvattupuzha is very famous for pineapple cultivation. Muvattupuzha is 18 km north-west of Thodupuzha. Nearest airport is the Cochin International Airport. Nearest major railhead is Ernakulam Junction Railway Station.
  • Muvattupuzha River is one of the important rivers in Ernakulam District of Kerala. This river is the union of three rivers - Thodupuzha, Kaliyar and Kothamangalam. These rivers join together at Muvattupuzha and then flow towards south-west as a single river to the Vaikkom Lake. Finally, it merges with the Arabian Sea. The famous Thommankuthu Waterfalls is situated in the river Muvattupuzha. Besides, a dam for irrigation purpose is built across this river.
  • I like Muvattupuzha verymuch as I have studied in Muvattupuzha and my friends are in there still. Very much devoloped town and people are very educated.
  • Muvattupuzha was part of the Vadakkumkoor Kingdom until it was captured by the Travancore Kingdom, now merged into the state of Kerala. Old documents show that the lands of Muvattupuzha belonged to ‘Edappally Swaroopam’, but were later transferred to ‘Manas’ (Brahmin Families).[1] St. Thomas, the Apostle of Jesus Christ, who introduced Christianity to India, is believed to have visited Muvattupuzha and converted several families to Christian faith. The St. Mary's Church of Arakuzha has a recorded history of over 1000 years, making it one of the oldest churches in Kerala. It is known for its paintings and sculptures. Muvattupuzha was also known as "Arakuzha Pakuthi"(half of arakuzha). After Indian Independence, Muvattupuzha, as a village union, came under the control of a council of three members nominated by the Government. V. P. Govindan Nair was the first president of the village union. By 1953, Muvattupuzha was declared a Panchayat. Kunnappillil Varkey Vaidyan was the first president of the elected Panchayat Committee. Muvattupuzha was raised to the status of a Municipality in the year 1958. N. Parameshwaran Nair became the first Municipal Chairman. Muvattupuzha made history as the first Municipality where the Communist Party came to power in a general election. N. P. Varghese was the first elected M.L.A. from Muvattupuzha Assembly Constituency. Later, K. M. George, founder of Kerala Congress represented Muvattupuzha. The first M.P. of Muvattupuzha (Lok Sabha constituency) was George Thomas Kottukapally. Of all the Municipal Chairmen of the town, P. P. Esthose deserves special mention. He was simultaneously an MLA and the Municipal Chairman of Muvattupuzha. He got state-level recognition as the Chairman of Chamber of Chairmen. In its entire history, he is the only Communist member elected to the Parliament from the constituency.

  • Muvattupuzha is a Municipal Town situated almost in the middle of the state, Muvattupuzha has a rich cultural heritage and memorable tradition
  • Muvattupuzha is 43kms east of Ernakulam city. It is a important town during the past years. Now, it is proposed to be made into a district headquarters. If a new Muvattupuzha district emerges, Muvattupuzha and Kothamangalam will develop fast into twin towns and also Piravom, Koothattukulam too will see fast development. The town is what can be called as natural centre for urban population with all the necessary conditions - three rivers meeting at the northern part of the town, filled with plain lands and good accessibility to western(Kochi,Aluva-Paravoor), northern(Perumbavur-Thrissur) and eastern side (Thodupuzha).
  • I like to disagree here. This place Muvattupuzha and other parts of midland region are by far the best place to live a peaceful life, YET get good connectivity to city(Kochi). However, please remember contagious diseases, poor lifestyle and poverty altogether are what is commonly observed in the past and even today in coastal towns and cities. Even British documented it. While we look down on coastal places, you seem to have a different POV. See Kothamangalam, Muvattupuzha-Piravom, Thodupuzha etc - much better place with good resources self sustaining unlike coastal towns. If you know history, the people from coastal region made these places their homes long back itself. guess why? Coast=poverty and diseases. Can name hundreds of contagious diseases and unhygenic conditions there.
