estate (manor / mansion land), interesting place
28120 Boulder Bridge Dr
Shorewood, MN 55331
Built in 1906 as a summer estate for the wealthy, the original owner of the large, Dutch Colonial home was Edmund J. Longyear, who founded what is now Boart Longyear, a global mineral exploration company, in 1888. It originally included 90 acres. In the late 1920s the house was sold to George Nelson Dayton, son of George Draper Dayton (founder of Dayton’s department store), who expanded the property and turned it into a working farm with herds of purebred Guernseys and Belgian horses. He named the area Boulder Bridge Farm after the quaint arched stone bridge that spanned the lagoon.
Tom Wartman, a Lake Minnetonka developer and business owner who grew up nearby purchased the property in 1976. In the 1980s he subdivided the 90 acres into 44 homesites and walking trails, naming the Shorewood association-maintained community Boulder Bridge Farm.
This 8,650 -square-foot main house has five bedrooms and nine baths. The restored carriage house (1,450 square feet), which has a fireplace and kitchen, and guest quarters above the garage, sits adjacent.
Although it sits on a large, 4.03 acre lot, it was part of a much larger estate which has since been subdivided (giving the property owner deeded rights to the community docks and lake shore access).
It was offered in 2013, for the first time in 4 decades, for $5,750,000.
