Tulira Castle, in County Galway is both beautiful and dramatic. It is also an important part of Ireland's ancient colourful heritage; a national landmark with its history tracing back to the original Twelve Tribes of Galway: specifically the De Burgos and the Martyns.
The original Castle Tower dates from the Middle Ages and the adjoining castellated house was constructed in 1882. Playwright Edward Martyn, whose works include Maeve and The Heather Field, inherited the house in the late 1880s. Martyn chose the Medieval Tower for his own headquarters and commissioned George Ashlin, a noted Gothic architect, to build a castle adjoining the Tower, upon the site of a former castle which burned to the ground. The result was a residence of grand stature befitting the period and its celebrated owner.
