USCGC Mackinaw (WLBB-30) (Cheboygan, Michigan)

USA / Michigan / Cheboygan / Cheboygan, Michigan
military, United States Coast Guard, cutter (ship)

Laid down in February 2004 at the Marinette Marine Corporation Shipyard as the replacement for the venerable USCGC Mackinaw (WAGB-83), the current USCGC Mackinaw commissioned into US Coast Guard service in June of 2006.

Assigned to the same station as her predecessor and tasked with the same vital task of keeping the Straits of Mackinac open for navigation as long as possible during the winter, the Mackinaw was also designed as a buoy tender and is presently tasked with maintaining several dozen Aids to Navigation. Capable of performing the traditional USCG missions of search and rescue and law enforcement, the Mackinaw is also equipped with oil skimming and oil booming equipment for pollution response.

Presently the USCGC Mackinaw and her crew operate as part of the US Coast Guard's 9th District.
