St. Christopher Bastion was intended to safeguard the south western coast of Valletta overlooking the Grand Harbour along with St. Lazarus Bastion towards its eastern flank and St. Barbara Bastion towards its western flank. It was included in Laparelli’s final plan for Valletta, dated June 1566. However, its proposed design is far from its actual configuration at the end of the eighteenth century and very remote from what remains of the bastion today.

Restoration works on St. Christopher’s Bastion is being carried out in two phases. The first phase, which has recently been concluded, concerned the restoration of lower St. Christopher’s Bastion (underneath the Great Siege Memorial) and was carried out after a public call for tenders. The second phase includes the restoration of Castille Curtain and upper St. Christopher Bastion (underneath Lower Barrakka Gardens). A public call for tenders has recently been published and restoration works commenced in the second quarter of 2011. Works are expected to be concluded by the end of 2012.
