  • An unregistered user would like to add: "I don't agree. The castle owner appears not to understand the meaning of motte and bailey. The small town of Stansted was handed to the Gernon family by William the (French) C. The heirs later changed name to Mountfitchet because it sounded posher and more French. There has been no attempt to recreate the kind of buildings that a rich aristocratic family would have used. Instead you have to walk round mud huts containing shop mannequins dressed in sack cloth. There is one surviving section of heavy flint wall, hinting at the grand house that once stood on the site. Everything else is a naive and frankly rediculous attempt to create a tourist attraction rather than a historically correct piece of important English heritage." Next time, if you have your own opinion on something, post it as a comment below and not in the main section.
  • I've been to both and agree with the previous posts - the "castle" doesn't square with what would have been there. When an American from Florida can spot the incongruity...:)
