Traianoupolis

Greece / Evros / Loutrys /
temple, ruins, fortress, Medieval / Middle Ages, ghost town

The ancient Roman city of Trainoupolis was founded by the emperor Trajan and named in his honor. By the Middle Ages, the hilltop fortress to its north was turned into the city's acropolis. The city declined in the later Middle Ages, and retained some importance only as a way station and the site of baths (modern Loutra Traianoupolis). The hilltop features various medieval ruins, as well as the more recent chapel of Saint George (or Constantine and Helena).
