The monastery of the Carmelites, known as the Carmelite Friary, had a great impact on the Patershol district. The Carmelites were originally from the Near East (Mount Carmel in Palestine indicate the origin of their name). Under pressure from the Islam they came to Europe. From 1287 they moved into the shelter of the Abbey of Cambron. Possibly there are still remnants of the refuge in the so-called Old House.
