Set at the head of Grey Street, one of the most splendid avenues of Georgian architecture in the UK, the Monument was built in 1837-8 paid for by public subscription and dedicated to Earl Grey.

Earl Grey was Prime Minister of Great Britain from 1830-4 who put the Reform Act of 1832 into law which began the modernisation of inclusive democracy. He also introduced into Britain the form of tea that bears his name.
