Newcastle University can trace its origins to a School of Medicine and Surgery, established in Newcastle in 1834, and to Armstrong College, which was founded in the city in 1871 for the teaching of physical sciences. Originally part of University of Durham, it was established as a separate entity by Act of Parliament in 1963. The Act named the school "University of Newcastle upon Tyne"; the shorter title has since become more popular.
