Raby Castle is a 12th century stone fortified manor house, founded by Dolfin, son of Uchtred. In 1378, John de Nevill was granted licence to crenellate and he established a commanding quadrangular castle. Enclosing a central courtyard and joined by medieval and modern curtain walls, are eight massive obliquely placed towers.
