This nondescript building, tucked away in a semi-industrial section of the upscale town of Sausalito, was once home to a legendary music studio known as “The Plant”. This studio first opened in1972 as the third “Record Plant” studio, preceded by the New York and Los Angeles locations. The list of artists that recorded albums here include Sly and the Family Stone, Fleetwood Mac, Mariah Carey, and Metallica (to name a few). It remained open through multiple ownership changes until 2008, when it closed for good.

As was common with music studios catering to celebrities and housing equipment worth tens of thousands of dollars, there was no signage indicating the true purpose of the building. Only a carving in the front door depicting animals playing musical instruments hinted at what was going on inside. Even the building’s address, 2200 Bridgeway, seemed to not exist (since the building was not directly accessible – or even visible – from Bridgeway).

As of 2013, it appears that the building is going to be used for a Yoga studio.
