“Dining as an event, with camaraderie, conversation, white table cloths”—that’s how Alice Eshelman describes a visit to her Roanoke restaurant, Joseph Decuis.

It’s named for a Creole ancestor of Eshelman’s who inspired the family’s love of good food, and it’s appropriately located in a fine and historic space—the 1922 Roanoke State Bank at 191 North Main Street in the northeast Indiana town. The original walk-in vaults now shelter a humidor and an award-winning wine cellar and seating has spilled over into the 1950s former bakery next door.

In our fast food, franchised world, true dining is fast becoming a lost art,” says Eshelman—but not at Joseph Decuis (pronounced “day-kweez”).
