The protected natural area of national interest is located in the southwestern extremity of Harghita county (on the border with Mureș county), on the administrative territory of Cristuru Secuiesc (in the southwestern part of Filiaș village), close to the DC43 road.
The nature reserve (known by the locals as "Colcăitor") is a swampy area (with vegetation specific to wetlands) in the area of which there are four cones of mud volcanoes; one of them having a permanent (but low) activity with gas and mud emanations.
