 office building  Add category

5-story office building completed in 1905. Designed by Joseph Wolf for liquor merchant Charles J. Degenhard, it is clad in orange brick and stone. The windows have flat stone lintels. They are slightly recessed on the lower four floors, and alternating bays at the 4th floor have splayed lintels. A cornice above the 4th floor has been removed, and the 5th floor is surmounted by a patterned brick parapet. There is a black iron fire escape on the Greenwich facade. The easternmost bay on Franklin Street has a keyed stone surround (now painted) at the entrance to the upper stories; the opening retains an historic wood-framed transom.

The visible eastern elevation is a simple brick wall with a brick return that matches the material of the facades. Tenants throughout the years have included several dye and chemical companies, and the building has been used for storage, office, and a chemical laboratory. The ground floor is occupied by Benvenuto Cafe.
