Under the ʿAbbāsid caliphs, the urban agglomeration of medieval Samarra (Sāmarrāʾ) extended well beyond the area of the modern town both to the north and south, even if we do not include the northern settlement of al-Mutawakkilīyah (with the famous Abū-Dulaf mosque and its spiral minaret), or the octagonal palace and other suburbs to the south. This extended Samarra was called Surra-Man-Raʾā. Although more of it is covered by the modern settlement(s) and agricultural fields than al-Mutawakkilīyah, there are also extensive areas with medieval ruins.
