Qalʿat ʿĀnah is the medieval citadel of ʿĀnah, located on an island in the Euphrates east of the old town. It is also the location of the older Mesopotamian city of Ḫānat or Ānat. The citadel proper stood at the northern end of the island, but is now effaced by modern agriculture. The most recognizable remains among those visible on the surface are those of the mosque's minaret. By sometime in the 18th/19th century, the island settlement was largely abandoned in favor of Old Anah on the south bank of the river farther to the west. Following the damming of the river downstream, at times much or all of the island has been submerged.
