Barnard Castle Market Cross (Barnard Castle)

United Kingdom / England / Barnard Castle
 market cross, weather vane

Despite the name, this market cross is in fact an octagonal building. It was built by a Barnard Castle resident called Thomas Breaks in 1747 and he gifted the building to the town. At various times this building has served the purpose of court, gaol, Town Hall and buttermarket. The building is octagonal in shape, surmounted by a bell-turret terminating in a weather-vane. Round the base is a series of Boric columns forming a veranda.
