apartment building, Georgian (architecture)
135-foot, 12-story Renaissance-revival sports club and residential building completed in 1915 as a clubhouse. Designed by Parish & Schroeder for the Young Women’s Christian Association of New York, it is clad in red brick with limestone trim. The facade has seven bays, with a low limestone base and central entrance recessed in a round-arch, with the doors at the end of a low set of steps. A rounded blue canvas canopy extends down and out over the sidewalk. The arch has a decorative stone molding, outlined by brick, and is topped by a cartouche. There is a metal service door in the limestone base at the easternmost bay, and the three west bays have low basement windows with iron grilles. Flanking the central arch are two smaller round-arches with simpler stone and brick moldings. Above the shoulders of the arches are four stone medallions. The outer bays have square-headed windows with stone enframements and projecting stone sills carried on console brackets. The 2nd floor has square-headed windows in each bay, with bracketed stone sills. Projecting flagpoles flank the center window. The 2nd floor is capped by a stone frieze surmounted by a dentiled cornice. At the center three bays paired console brackets support a stone balcony with a balustraded front. There are also balustrades below the 3rd-floor outer-bay windows. The windows in the middle three bays are paired. All the windows on the 3rd floor have stone surrounds and shield keystones, and there is a band course with egg-and-dart molding along the top edge.
The 4th-10th floors have paired windows in each bay except for the center, which has single-windows, all with stone sills. A dentiled band course sets off the top two floors, which have paired windows in each bay, set within slightly-recessed round-arches; the individual top-floor windows are also round-arched. The facade is crowned by a bracketed dark-red metal roof cornice.
The east elevation is clad in red brick with one bay of single-windows. The lower floors were occupied by the New York Health & Racquet Club, and the upper floors contain 94 apartment units.
