Lexington House

USA / New Jersey / West New York / East 56th Street, 141
 apartment building, commercial building

133-foot, 12-story residential building completed in 1940. Designed by Hyman Isaac Feldman, it is clad in buff-colored brick above a limestone ground floor, painted grey at the east end and white at the west end. In the middle is a recessed section, the west half of which contains the main entrance, framed in stainless-steel. It has glass double-doors flanked by plate-glass windows, and a stainless-steel canopy that angles out to project past the main wall of the facade to the left. The rest of the ground floor has metal-and-glass storefronts, with a metal service door at the west end. A ribbed band caps the ground floor.

At the upper floors the recessed middle section has two bays of triple-windows (3-over-2 panes) flanked by two narrow single-windows on each side. The inward-facing sidewalls each have a double-window that wraps around the corner to the triple-window bay on the inner edge of both outer wings. The east wing then has two bays of narrow single-windows, a triple-window, and a double-window in the end bay. The west wing is slightly wider, with two bays of narrow single-windows, a double-window, triple-window, and another double-window in the end bay. The facade is dotted with protruding air-conditioning units.

The end bays terminate above the 9th floor, topped by metal railings. The wings are therefore narrower at above, with angled corner windows at the 10th-11th floors, where there is another setback with metal railings. The recessed middle section rises flush to a setback above the 11th floor, also with metal railings. The roof line at the 12th floor has a stone coping, and a large brick mechanical penthouse and water tank enclosure rises from the north-center of the roof.

The west elevation is also brick, with a bay of single-windows on the front wing. The rear part of the west facade is set further back and has two bays of narrow single-windows, a wider single-window, and two bays of double-windows, with a setback above the 11th floor; the east elevation is similar.

The building contains 113 apartment units. The ground floor is occupied by Drybar salon, and Grande Central on 56th bathroom supply showroom.
