In the 14th. century a Gothic parish church replaced a romanesque building, probably after Earl Arnold V of Loon offered Averbode Abbey to take over the patronage of the church. The new choir made use of that older substrate.
In 1886 the nave and transept were replaced with a longer neo-gothic structure featuring side aisles by Ferdinand Lohest, while the massive 14th. century early-gothic tower and the central nave remained unchanged.
