State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) is an entirely state owned organization responsible for the generation and distribution of electricity to customers throughout the Maldives.

Around the nation, we operate in 27 islands, employing approximately 700 employees. The company offers electricity energy and support the economic development of the Republic.

STELCO has a proud history of over 50 years of delivering exceptional service to the general public. In this process, a unique business culture has emerged that drives employees to perform their absolute best.

The history of the company dates back to 1949, and was initially known as the Electricity Department. Afterwards it was re-named as Maldives Electricity Board (MEB).

On June 19, 1997 MEB was changed to State Electric Company Ltd (STELCO) and the Maldivian Government established STELCO as a totally state owned company.

Initially the number of customers were 50 houses in Male’. Today ( 3Q 2006) the total number of customers have increased to 21,291 in Male’ and 17,770 cosumers in the islands powerhouses, providing electricity to 60% of the total population of Maldives.
