The tower is located near the Greater Winnipeg Water District Railway Depot. The GWWD Railway was built in 1914-15 to build and maintain the 93 mile Shoal Lake (Ontario) Aqueduct that has provided fresh water for Winnipeg since 1915. This water tower is no longer in use.
