Hippie Nostalgia or Unique Social Experiment?

Christiania is a self governing community with around 1000 inhabitants, families and kids. There is no private property trade within the community, disabling speculation.

The area is a former military base. In 1972 it was occupied by local parents and hippies, who wanted a place to live, with space for children and creativity.

Christiania has since then evolved into a self-made metrovillage with widespread re-use of trashed building materials, alternative architecture and a rich cultural life.

For some time, hash and pot has been traded openly within a small area of the community, following a decision of the highest authority of Christiania, the common meeting.

Christiania is currently under treat from the Danish right-wing government, who wants to normalise the area by introducing trade of private property into the area.

  • They also refuse to pay the same tax as the rest of the danish society, and they enforce a strict control of whom are to be a "citizen" in their closed community. The danish government is not trying to close Christiania, they are only trying to make the danish law applicable to all citizens in Denmark, including people living in Christiania.
