At Carrollton the Wabash and Erie Canal fed traffic into the river so that the canal could switch to the other side. The canal ran from the east along the north side of the river and entered the Wabash just to the west of the bridge, using a guard gate to prevent the river from flowing back into the canal during high water. There was a bridge to allow mules and horses that towed the boats to cross to the other side as well. The canal left the river just a few miles downriver to make its path through Delphi, where some of it has been restored.
