Giza Zoo (Giza)

Egypt / Giseh / Gizeh / Giza
 park, zoo, interesting place

The Zoo in Giza Egyot is the biggest zoo in Egypt. Khedevi Ismail donated his once known as Harem gardens to become the zoological garden of Egypt. It was planned by Khedevi Ismail to be opened in 1869 parallel to the celebration of opening the Suez Canal, but it was first open for the public in March 1891. It has an area of 80 Feddans at the west bank of the Nile near Cairo University. It is near down town Cairo with good transportation possibilities. It has a huge number of animals and enjoys very beautiful architecture with hills, dales, beautiful pathways and waterfalls as well as seldom seen plants imported from abroad. Horticulturists, arborists, and gardeners have established outstanding naturalistic habitats for exotic animals. It also serves as a scientific center for zoologists to study animal behaviour and environment protection. Animals that are threatened by extinction are bred here and then returned to their original environment.
