The original portion of the building was built in 1922 as Clarkfield High School. In 1977, the H.A. Hagg Elementary School, which served kindergarten through sixth grade, was added to the building. In 1994, Granite Falls School District 892 merged with Clarkfield School District 894 to become Granite Falls-Clarkfield School District 2183. The high school students were sent to Granite Falls Senior High School, and in addition to the elementary school, the building became Granite Falls-Clarkfield Junior High School, which served seventh and eighth grade. In 1995, the Granite Falls-Clarkfield School District 2183 merged with Echo School District 893 to become Yellow Medicine East School District 2190. At this time, the junior high school was renamed Yellow Medicine East Junior High School. In 2004, the junior high students were sent to Yellow Medicine East Middle/High School in Granite Falls, but the elementary school remained. In 2008, H.A. Hagg Elementary School closed, and students now attend Bert Raney Elementary School in Granite Falls. In 2013, a technology start-up company named Skajaquoda opened up in the building. The company was later renamed Janulus, and they vacated the premises in 2015. The City of Clarkfield acquired the building, and the majority of the building was demolished in 2019, with the Clarkfield Gymnasium demolished in 2020.
