runway, abandoned / shut down, historical layer / disappeared object
Built during the Second World War by the Glenn L Martin Company as a secondary crosswind runway to support flight testing and deliveries of their B-26 Marauder and B-29 Superfortress bombers, runway 03/21 was found to be superfluous by the US Air Force as the capabilities of modern jet engines over then-conventional piston engines made the crosswind runway unnecessary. Today, the former runway has been largely repurposed as Taxiway M North & South, with the Northern portion serving as the Hot Cargo Pad for the base.
